Farmers Big and Small: There's Room for Them All

I love being able to make choices. I love that I can choose what pair of shoes to wear, what car I drive, and what I'm going to have for breakfast. These are all choices that I make daily, just like many of you. This is the beauty of living in the United States. Freedom of our choices. We make hundreds of choices every day, a few of them concerning food.

Small farmers that participate in farmers markets give you the choice to support the local economy and buy locally grown food. They give you a choice to get fresh, delicious produce. They give you a choice to support their local business, which in turn goes to support your local community. Did you know that a dollar spent in your community gets turned over about seven times in that same community?

Large farmers give me the choice of buying ethanol for my car, which in turn works for a cleaner air supply. They give me the choice of buying inexpensive cereal. They give me the choice in buying skim OR 2 percent milk. They give me the choice of buying a turkey or ham sandwich at Subway. (Turkey meat used at Subway comes from Iowa turkey farms!)

All farmers give us choices. Choices in specialty food markets and choices in one of the most inexpensive food markets in the world.

There's no such thing as who's a better farmer. Big or small. Smaller farmers are doing very similar practices as the larger farmers, just on a smaller scale. Large farmers are doing some of the same practices a smaller farmer is doing, just on a larger scale. It's the farmers choice on how they want to operate and feed the world. They have choices too.

There is room in this world for ALL farmers. They are all working towards one common goal.

To feed You and Your family. You have the choice.

Thank a farmer for giving you that choice.
